HEIKAMP & VAN DOORN

 

 

Zetten – A village in the municipality of Overbetuwe, in the Dutch province of Gelderland, not far from the German border. Here, on Sunday morning, August 3rd, the international winner Perpignan arrived at the lofts of Piet Heikamp (71) and Marco van Doorn (29) and made that day a day both men will never forget in their entire live. 

 

“Miss Perpignan” NL22-8268412 was clocked at 7.47.42 am with an average speed of 1.191 m/m and became the INTERNATIONAL Perpignan winner against 11,860 pigeons !! (NOTE: lot 1 in the auction is a beautiful daughter of “Miss Perpignan”) 

Piet is a former professional soldier, and Marco is a veterinarian by profession. Piet started with ornamental pigeons in the 1990s but later switched to racing pigeons. Marco had once rescued a pigeon and that’s how he got involved in the sport. He started talking with pigeon fanciers, one thing led to another, and in 2008 he started racing pigeons himself. In 2011, he switched to overnight long-distance racing. This was partly for practical reasons—this season is shorter and therefore less work—but also because it’s so wonderful to see pigeons return home after a heroic battle against the elements. In 2020, the gentlemen joined forces with a focus on the overnight long-distance and that decision was the start of their succes story …

 

 

Piet and Marco have about 60 meters of loft, 15 of which are breeding pairs. These houses 35 pairs and 15 breeding pairs. All lofts have a pleasant climate, which is crucial for the pigeons. The garden loft required some adjustments to achieve this, as it was too drafty. Piet: “At a certain moment we closed the garden loft completely and the pigeons were doing so well that the loft remained closed. The only ventilation is in the roof of this loft”. Breeding pigeons are housed elsewhere in breeding boxes.

Marco: “In 2020, we started working together completely, and both colonies merged.” The main line consists of the old lines of “Miss Europe” & “De Parel”, “De Pau 450” (who became International Ace Pau 2 yr, and whose offspring are also very good), and pigeons from the late Bennie de Vries (primarily from “De Perigueux”, “De Dakhaas”, and “Geerdink”).
Since 2019, pigeons have been purchased from Appie Pas, and they were an immediate success. These are the direct lines of “New Laureaat” & “New Witbuik“, both inbred lines. About ten more were acquired in 2020, and several more were purchased from Appie in 2024. Those are the pigeons that form the current, very succesful, colony of Piet & Marco.

 

Piet and Marco had a great season in 2025 with a Provincial victory from Ruffec (1st NPO and 2nd National s3 Ruffec) and another top pigeon on this flight, a 3rd National Perigueux, the 1st and 4th Provincial/NPO Dax, 3rd Provincial/NPO Marseille and to top it all off, the 1st International Perpignan !!
