In the Noordoostpolder lives this very skilled pigeon fancier with excellent achievements. He knows better than anyone that good performances depend on good pigeons. That’s why he’s been bringing good pigeons into his loft for decades. Only then can you expect top results which happens with the utmost regularity. Jaap Mazee achieved national victories from Bergerac and St. Vincent, and earned numerous top prizes.
His pigeons have to travel enormous distances, and in Ens, where Jaap lives, he’s in a kind of no-man’s-land, where less than a handful other fanciers are present. This makes the performance of his pigeons very special and reflects the class of his pigeon strain!!
Jaap Mazee’s current pigeon breed is mainly built on pigeons from the Brugemann Brothers, ‘Orhana’ and ‘De Orhan-kweker’, bred from the world-famous ‘Orhan’ of the brothers from Assendelft. During those early years, Jaap also had pigeons from Piet Heikamp from Zetten. These pigeons together form the foundation of the Jaap Mazee colony.
Pigeons from Nico Volkens and Vertelman were added. Later, Jaap, along with his late pigeon fancier friend Ernst Verheijen from Putten, obtained pigeons (a round of eggs) from Jos Pepping and a few top pigeons from Vincent Vork (Peter de Haan, Jan Schreurs, J.L. de Bruine/PWA van der Meulen) are the latest newcomers.
Jaap is known to many fanciers as the “potato farmer”. His reputation in pigeon racing is primarily based on his outstanding performances in the extreme long distance, but he truly enjoys all disciplines. The marathon emerged as a passion because he spent a lot of time abroad and developed a system focused on simplicity. The simpler, the closer to nature, the better for the pigeons. Jaap studied Biotechnology at Wageningen University & Research under Professor Jacobsen, who always said: “if it’s complicated, it can never be good”. Jaap has taken this to heart and applied it to his marathon pigeon management/system.
